First things first. What is rss feeds?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering updated web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Mostly in XML-based systems, it allows readers who subscribe to the feed to view updated content of their favorite websites. A standard format allows webmasters to create streams which can be use by RSS software or delivered as content to another site.

How is it helpful for website subscribers?

For someone like me, I have to keep myself updated on 10 different sites, ranging,
from news, to business, to blogs of other entrepreneurs. In such cases its cumbersome to keep track, visit and read entire articles. RSS feeds gives updates on these sites automatically. My privacy is maintained, and I save time. So could you!

What is Adsense?

Google Adsense – And Feeds?

Google had been testing adsense for feed through beginning ’08 and finally launched it to the general public somewhere midway through the same year.

What is basically does is allow publishers to earn by placing targeted ads in their feeds. It works the same logical way as other Adsense units in terms of delivering your ads, relevant to page topic.
The feeds can be paid by click or impression.

Ads can also be targeted by contextually targeting to content of feed, or targeted by advertisers to the specific feed.

Usefullness of Adsense for feeds?

Well, ever heard of the term monetization? Of course the including adsense for feeds is for the same purpose. Add to that the concept, of giving your users a richer interactive experience. Adsense for feed, provides another channel of earning for webmasters with a huge subscriber base. Of course the very aspect of ad display should not be overdone, else it irritates your fan base.
User behavior in this case may be very different than in terms of contextual ads. While normal pages, the user clicks for more information the click through for RSS feed ads may not be the same.
Perhaps it is better to create separate channels for Adsense through feed, in order to track the hit rates for it, and to further test if its working out for your site.

As a tip, make sure your RSS feed has good value, to compensate the greater annoyance from subscribers for ad presence. Moreover, limit the number of ads units to one per feed article.

Presently, I have only noticed ads in 468?30 image formats. The publisher can fully control the display and visibility of the ad units, just like other formats. (Read adsense for content).

Try it out as a test case!
